In S1-S3 pupils will make progress through the Broad General Education. Learning in the English department will focus on building young people’s capacity to read, write, listen and talk with increasing confidence and sophistication.
The department’s focused approach to skills development will allow all learners to make good progress towards qualifications within the senior phase. At the centre of learning within the English department is the study of high quality literature and all young people will have the opportunity to experience a range of texts. These texts will range from prose, drama, poetry and media to blogs and podcasts – all of which will broaden learners’ understanding of language and its use. Scottish texts will form a mandatory part of the course in order to encourage pride in and raise awareness of our cultural heritage. This aspect aligns with the demands of the National 5 and Higher qualifications.
Assessment is continuous throughout the course to enable teachers to track how pupils are progressing at any stage throughout the session. Assessment will be both formative and summative and will involve set tasks on critical essays, textual analysis, reading for understanding, analysis and evaluation (close reading), writing in various forms and talking/listening exercises.
As with every stage of the English courses the overall aim is to engage young people with reading and writing and to develop, to the highest degree possible, the personal growth and language competence of each pupil through providing them with an engaging and enriching experience within the department.
The National 3 course is run in S4. It allows pupils to progress from the Broad General Education received through CfE in S1-S3 and work towards attaining a recognised English award. Pupils can progress from National 3/4 in S4, to attempt National 5 in S5.
This Course is made up of three mandatory Units. Units are statements of standards for assessment and not programmes of learning and teaching. They can be delivered in a number of ways: English: Understanding Language (National 3)
The purpose of this Unit is to provide learners with the opportunity to develop listening and reading skills in the contexts of literature, language and media. Learners develop the skills needed to understand, analyse and evaluate simple texts.
English: Producing Language (National 3)
The purpose of this Unit is to provide learners with the opportunity to develop talking and writing skills in familiar contexts. Learners develop the skills needed to produce simple texts in both written and oral forms.
Literacy (National 3)
The purpose of this Unit is to develop the learners’ reading, writing, listening and talking skills in a variety of forms relevant for learning, life and work. Learners develop the ability to understand simple ideas and information presented orally and in writing. Learners develop the ability to communicate ideas and information orally and in writing with technical accuracy.
At National 3 level there is no final exam. To achieve the National 3 English Course, learners must pass all of the required Units.
The National 4 course is run in S4. It allows pupils to progress from the Broad General Education received through CfE in S1-S3 and work towards attaining a recognised English award. Pupils can progress from National 4 in S4, to attempt National 5 in S5.
The National 4 course covers two units:
The units are assessed in class by the teacher and verified externally by the SQA.
In addition to the two units above, students will also complete a Literacy Unit. This is a mandatory unit in the course and will record pupils’ ability in basic literacy skills.
At National 4 level there is no final exam. This has been replaced by an internally assessed Added Value Unit, which involves students researching a chosen topic independently and completing a written (or oral) presentation of their work.
The National 5 course is run from S4 to S6. It allows pupils to progress from the Broad General Education received through CfE in S1-S3 and work towards attaining a Higher award in S5/6.
Recent changes to the National 5 course structure offer 2 different course pathways for pupils: a full Course Award, achieved at the end of the year by successfully completing the exam, or a Units Only approach where pupils will complete internal assessments in place of the final exam.
The pathway followed by each pupil will be agreed on an individual basis and based upon the progress and achievement demonstrated by the pupil over the course of the year.
The National 5 units include:
The units are assessed in class by the teacher and verified externally by the SQA. These internal assessments will only be undertaken by those pupils following the Units Only pathway.
For those pupils following the Course Award route, a Writing Folio is also required– A selection of two writing pieces from different genres, which are sent away to the exam board for external marking and make up 30% of the overall final grade. There will also be a formal Spoken Language Assessment that must be completed prior to the exam.
The final exam takes place at the end of the year and is set by the SQA. It includes two exam papers:
The exam counts for 70% of your final grade.
Your overall award is made up by combining your grades from both the final exam and the writing folio.

The Higher course is run in S5 and S6. This allows pupils to progress from National 5 English and to achieve a higher award which is recognised by universities, colleges and employers. The Higher course is a challenging one and involves a great deal of focus and dedication.
Recent changes to the Higher course structure offer 2 different course pathways for pupils: a full Course Award, achieved at the end of the year by successfully completing the exam, or a Units Only approach where pupils will complete internal assessments in place of the final exam.
The Higher course mirrors the N5 structure that most pupils will have previously experienced :

Advanced Higher English offers the opportunity to develop complex language skills which are essential for learning, life and work. Through study at this level you will develop the ability to interpret, produce and appreciate a wide range of literature and texts in different genres. This enables you to access your own cultural heritage and history, as well as the culture and history of others.
The course is comprised of 4 parts, two of which (Literary Study and Textual Analysis) are predominantly teacher led. In previous years we have studied a range of rich and sophisticated texts such as drama by Tennessee Williams and Henrik Ibsen, novels like Jane Eyre and Rebecca and the poetry of Seamus Heaney. You will also have the opportunity to personalise your study through the other two components (Dissertation and Writing Portfolio) which are expected to be completed independently.
A Pass at Higher A or B is necessary for success in this course, as is a willingness to read texts well ahead of time and work independently.

The Raven - a quarterly magazine of fiction, art and opinion. Meeting held on Mondays at lunch time in Room 107
All staff typically run supported study for H & N5, especially in the run up to assessments and exams. These sessions will be advertised in the department.
The department also encourages a drop-in approach at lunchtimes for pupils to access support as and when they need it.

Irvine Royal Academy offers pupils the opportunity to study French and Spanish up to Higher level, while developing their reading, writing, talking and listening skills.
In S1 and S2 pupils currently study French for 2 periods a week and Spanish for 1 period a week. In S3 all pupils currently study French for 2 periods and pupils who have chosen Spanish as an option receive a further 3 periods of Spanish.
