S1-3 take part in the BGE course that offers pupils the opportunity to experience a wide range of activities from Football, Rugby, Basketball, Badminton, Gymnastics, Athletics & Social Dance.
There is an additional optional performance course in S3 for any pupil who has aspirations of completing certificated PE during their senior phase.
S4-6 pupils can choose PE as a certificated class at National 4, National 5 and Higher level along with a number of other subjects designed to raise attainment within the Health and Wellbeing Faculty. These include Leadership, Sport & Recration, Coaching, First Aid, Wellbeing and Childcare.
The department offer a wide range of extra-curricular activities with the help of staff from through-out the school and senior pupils.

Irvine Royal Academy PE department offers a wide range of physical activities to promote Health & Wellbeing and encourage lifelong participation.
Pupils progress through each activity with the aim to cover a range of expereince and outcomes incorporating the significant aspects of learning allowing pupils to demonstrate their practical ability and the knowledge & understanding they have learned.

The S3 pupils Elective course is designed around improving our aspiring pupils performance and introducing the factors that impact on their performance.
Through practical experiences pupils will develop their knowledge of the Physical, Mental, Emotional and Social Factors while developing their significant aspects of learning.

The written element of the national 5 course is through a Portfolio that is completed in class following the SQA guidelines and procedures and then submitted for extrenal marking. This makes up 50% of their final grade.
Pupils complete 2 single performances in two different sports. This makes up 50% of their final grade.

The Higher Physical Education (PE) course broadens and deepens through time the knowledge you acquired at National 5. It is divided in to two different components: performance and exam. Each of these components contributes 50% to your overall grade.
The performance component of the course involves you being assessed in two different activities. Both of these performances will be assessed on a 1-off basis: how you perform on the day determines your score. Each performance is assessed out of 30 marks. You will be assessed against the following criteria.
The exam component assesses you’re theoretical knowledge and understanding of course content. You will be required to build and expand your knowledge of the four factors from National 5.
Questions in the exam will evolve around how these factors can impact performance as well as the different ways they can be taken through the Cycle of Analysis.

Home economics centres on health and nutrition. Pupils are given the opportunity to build vital life skills that will allow them to live independently beyond their classrooms, which include organisational skills and budgeting, as well as valuable talents for the workplace.
