Irvine Royal Academy currently offers S4 pupils the following Skills for Work courses at Level 4/5:
Both Nail Bar and Bike Maintenance are accredited and delivered in partnership with Ayrshire College. Lecturers from the college are scheduled to attend Irvine Royal Academy weekly to deliver sessions on site alongside school teaching staff.
These courses are partially funded by Developing the Young Workforce Ayrshire and the Princes Trust.
This course is split into three main areas: barista skills, hospitality training and events management. S4 pupils attend Barista for four periods each week and will divide their time between barista theory and practical learning. Successful completion of this course will equip students with an in depth knowledge of the hospitality industry, whilst also developing their skills for life, learning and work.
As part of their events management module, pupils have the opportunity to organise and get involved in various events across the school calendar throughout the year; such as coffee mornings, festive drink tastings, staff wellbeing meetings and the Halloween Ghost Tour to name a few! In December 2022, Royal Aroma donated £219.20 to MacMillan Cancer Care following their successful festive coffee morning.
So far in 2023/24, Royal Aroma has attended a wealth of extra-curricular and school events, such as music concerts, parents evenings and parents in partnership events.
Royal Aroma has developed, going from strength to strength over the past few years and becoming a profitable business in August 2023. Loyalty cards can be purchased from Miss McNeil for anyone wanting their caffeine fix, with all profits going towards diversifying their menu and creating opportunities for classes.
“The barista class is such a welcomed addition to Irvine Royal. I love seeing the pupils engaging and growing in confidence – watching them succeed in and out the classroom. I love how they adapt their menus for different seasons and events. Their hot chocolate is always one of the highlights of my day!” – Mr Elliot, Teacher of Business Education
Delivered in partnership with Ayrshire College, Miss McNeil and Mrs Lowrie are supporting the 2023/24 delivery of Polished nail bar. This years group have made an excellent start and have started perfecting their skills in filing, polishing and nail art.
The group have also been covering other aspects of the beauty industry and have been learning specliast skills in hair styling: such as braiding, curling and formal wedding styling.
